"More roller than coaster!"

Karl Burke is the son of a publican and a nurse and grew up in a pub before starting out in racing as a 16-year-old riding work before a career as a jockey and then transitioning to the training ranks via running a livery yard and other insecure financial means in what was sometimes a 'hand to mouth' existence with his wife Elaine, who has also held the licence at Spigot Lodge in Middleham in a family operation in which daughters Kelly and Lucky are integral.

Burke is at the top of his game and has won Classics and Group Ones and enjoys the patronage of huge owners and big rising forces in global Flat racing now - including Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, Amo Racing and Wathnan Racing - but a winning bet on one of his Ayr Gold Cup winners was instrumental in helping him to survive in the training ranks several years ago while more recently Burke was diagnosed with bowel cancer, which has since been successfully treated.
