Ontario Premier Doug Ford spoke Wednesday shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “minimum baseline tariff rate” of 10 per cent, and 25 per cent on foreign-made vehicles.

Asked if the Ontario government perceived the announcement as devastating, Ford responded saying “if it was 25 per cent and 10 per cent on top of that — yes — but we don’t believe that that’s the situation.”

Neither Canada nor Mexico were included on a list of tariffed countries and the premier was asked if that appeared to be a slight. “I think that’s good news actually when we aren’t named on that list,” Ford said.

Ford remained reserved in his judgement until more is known. “I don’t really want to comment because I’m hoping it’s positive news but as we all know that can change hour-by-hour, day-by-day.
