Invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761, it consists of glass bowls mounted horizontally that are rotated by a pedal. A wet finger is touched to the surface of the rotating glass to produce a subtle, high-frequency tone. However, problems arise precisely at these frequencies. High sound waves can trigger stress or mild psychological disorders, especially in sensitive listeners. To add insult to injury, the glass used at the time contained lead. When touched repeatedly, lead ions can be absorbed into the skin, causing slow poisoning.
