The You Yangs: How Tasmania's Collision with Australia Created Massive Volcanic Mountains

#youyangs #victoria #melbourne #werribee #geelong #westernplains #australia #geology #geological #geologicalhistory #earthscience #geoscience The You Yangs are somewhat of an enigma to many Melburnians. Some say it's a volcano that erupted long ago, and others just have no idea what they're looking at. In this video, we clear that and many other questions. The You Yangs are a byproduct of the continent-to-continent collision that occurred some 430 million years ago between the microcontinent of Tasmania and Western Victoria. Mighty mountain ranges were constructed as result of this collision, and along with this, a vast amount of magma began to upwell towards the conclusion of the collision, with it leaving behind some incredible features to marvel at in present day, after erosion has wittled kilometers worth of overburden down, and several rifting events have worked to thin out the one dramatically thickened crust here.
