If you’re just a scholar, then you’re too soft, and if you’re just an athlete then you’re too crude. The ideal citizen is the Scholar Athlete, a person of thought and a person of action.


You guys really didn’t like what Xenophanes thought about glorifying athletes. Those of you who didn’t get it, I clearly stated in the video and the caption, which you cannot edit after btw. That I was quoting his opinions and that they weren’t my personal beliefs.


Who cares what my personal opinions are. I’m here to share what the famous philosophers thought in this series.


What I said at the beginning, again is not my opinion.


Welcome back to another episode of my famous philosophers series, the beginning quote and the rest of this video is about Plato.


He got the name Plato from his wrestling coach; his name means BROAD because he had broad chest and shoulders.


Now imagine for a second that there are people tied up in a cave with a fire behind them and all they see are shadows that are cast on a wall in front of them, they believe these shadows are reality. But then one of the people manages to escape and goes behind the fire that was casting the shadow to see the real world.


Of course at first he is in denial because it’s so hard for him to change his mind, to forget everything he has seen all his life and come to the conclusion, that this, this is the real world. He then goes back to explain it to the people who are still tied up in the cave, looking at the shadows, but it’s impossible, they won’t believe him. They make fun of him and tell him he’s crazy.


He understands that he is no longer speaking their language, he has to sit back there and go back to his shadow mindset to be able to explain the true nature of reality.


Well, the funny thing is that, we might be in the shadow world as well, this is where Plato’s Forms comes into play. Everything you see around you is a shadow, there is one realm outside of space-time where the ideal state of everything exists.


Physical objects sure, like the ideal chair, the chair we see in our mind when we hear the word. The ideal table, but more importantly the ideal beauty, equality, likeness, unity. It’s very important for people to understand the ideal Justice as well.


Almost nobody does bad things on purpose, that’s why it’s important for people to understand what is good, to do good. The knowledge of knowing what is good, is what we call virtue.


Now you might be wondering why does this all matter. It’s important to understand philosophy because it’s important to be enlightened and to seek knowledge. I’m not a philosophy major, I’m learning with you as we go, I’m just somebody who’s interested in the topic.


I have engineering science business degrees, but none of those help me become enlightened.


Becoming enlightened is important because without it, it would be like me seeing the world without these glasses. All blurry. I wouldn’t know where to go, I wouldn’t know what even exists for me to be able to find what I’m looking for. According to Plato I wouldn’t even be fit to vote.


When I said education is important, I’m not talking about going back to school, I’m talking about just reading, allocating some time in your day to learning something new, anything, expanding your horizons. Gaining the ability to think for yourself instead of following the latest trend.


Again, you might be thinking these are my opinions, but they are not, I’m still trying my best to portray Plato’s character based on my understanding. That’s the whole point of these videos, I guess I’m trying the method actor thing.
