Rome is the capital of the Italian Republic and the most populated municipality of Italy. It is also the capital of the Lazio region and the administrative center of the Metropolitan City of Rome. The municipality of Rome has a special administrative system, called Roma Capitale.
Palazzo Barberini is a palace in Rome that houses part of the important Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica and the Italian Institute of Numismatics. It is located in Via delle Quattro Fontane, in the historic center of Rome.
Via delle Quattro Fontane is a street in Rome that leads from Piazza Barberini towards Via Nazionale. It marks the border between the districts of Monti, Trevi and Castro Pretorio. The name derives from the Four Fountains (Quattro Fontane in Italian) at its intersection with Via del Quirinale, representing the Tiber River, the Arno River, the Goddess Diana and the Goddess Juno.
Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) in Rome, Italy, climb a steep slope between Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church, at the top.
Piazza Colonna in Rome owes its name to the column of Marcus Aurelius that has stood here since ancient times, and which also gives its name to the Colonna district, of which the square is part. The square, built towards the end of the sixteenth century by Pope Sixtus V, stands on the central Via del Corso, near Montecitorio and the Pantheon, not far from Piazza Venezia. On the north side of the square, right in front of the column, is the entrance to Palazzo Chigi, which is the seat of the Council of Ministers and the official residence of the Prime Minister of Italy.
The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the basilicas of Rome, located in Piazza dell'Esquilino on the top of the hill of the same name. It is the only basilica in Rome to have preserved its original early Christian structure, albeit enriched by later additions. Along the left side aisle of the basilica, between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel, near the altar dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi, stands the tomb of Pope Francis, buried there according to his wishes.
