The vale had been quiet for a hundred years. Where once songs danced with the breeze and laughter echoed beneath the silver-leaved trees, only mist remained — drifting like forgotten dreams between the stones.

But she still came.

Each evening, as the last light bled across the sky, Elira walked the old path, her cloak trailing over roots and moss. They called her the Last Watcher, though she was no warrior. Only someone who remembered. Who believed.

In her hands, she carried a lantern — not of flame, but of memory. It pulsed faintly, alive with the warmth of a promise made long ago: “When the stars grow dim, I will guide you home.”

They thought him lost, swallowed by the war beyond the mountains. But she knew better. She felt him. And tonight, as moonlight brushed the vale in silver, the lantern flared bright in her grasp.

A figure stepped through the mist.

He was older, wearier, and broken in places the world could not see — but when his eyes met hers, the light in the vale was no longer just a memory. It was a beginning.
