As with the band's previous releases, the 14 songs from the album Load were originally sketches and demos composed by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich and recorded at Lars ' studio The Dungeon. The group chose about 30 of them and in the spring of 1995 went to The Plant Studios, where they worked for the next year. The band's producer was again Bob Rock, who had worked with Metallica during the recording of The Black Album.
