“Life has lost its meaning. My heart longed for revenge, ”the shaman and military leader of the freedom-loving Apache Indians, Geronimo, wrote in his memoirs.
He turned to the leaders, and they agreed that it was necessary to punish the enemies who attacked the Indians, and this at the time - when the Apache was guaranteed peace ...
Soldiers killed his family, wife and children...
But most of the tribal lands were ceded to the United States following the results of the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.
A few years later, the United States began to master them.
First came the land surveyors, the pioneers, and behind them followed the white gold diggers, and in their midst there were many adventurers and outright criminals who despised the law.
Chief Cochis and other Apaches let them in, not knowing that the pale-faced would behave on Indian soil like cruel conquerors: they could insult, rob or kill an Indian with impunity.
Gradually the situation heated up.
In 1861, the whites began to threaten Kochis himself, and his relatives suffered.
The chief ordered Geronimo to fight back. Apache Geronimo killed whites without discrimination of gender and age.
The US Army came to protect the settlers.
Military clashes in the 1860s-70s. almost did not stop, flashing here and there in the states of Arizona and New Mexico.
Both sides were brutal. When attacking the Indians, American soldiers killed without hesitation, while the rest were forced to be sent to the reservations.
The Apaches responded in kind: they attacked ranches and forts, led away horses, mules, hostages, and killed soldiers and civilians.
Despite their courage, knowledge of the area and dexterity, the Indians were doomed.
General George Crook (whose aide-de-camp was an officer who researched Indian history) believed that savage tribes could be integrated into American society by offering them education.
He wrote of his opponents:
“They are children of ignorance. I don't want this to be taken as an excuse for their crimes, but I want to say something to stem the tide of insults that the Apache people have been subjected to almost everywhere.
Greed, greed and the almighty dollar are nine-tenths of our Indian problems.”
In the early 1880s, Geronimo and the Chiricahua Apaches that followed him were the last tribe not to recognize US rule, just as they had previously rejected Mexican rule.
Today - the name Geronimo - is a symbol of inflexibility under oppression, a symbol of faith, and a role model for those who value freedom and open spaces ...
