Have you ever seen a sudden downpour of rain accompanied by strong winds that feel like a strong push from above? This could be a microburst phenomenon. Microbursts occur when hail or large raindrops fall through a dry layer of air in the atmosphere. As the ice grains melt and the rainwater evaporates, they absorb heat from the surrounding air. This dramatically cools the air, making it denser and heavier. This cold air then falls to the surface at high velocity, creating strong wind gusts that can reach 160km/h. Microbursts are often mistaken for small tornadoes, but the effect is more like a downward blow of air that spreads in all directions. This phenomenon is dangerous to aircraft taking off or landing because it can cause a sudden loss of lift.
