This year an unbelievable discovery was made. The victims of the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which buried Pompeii, and inflicted serious damage to several other Roman settlements, actually turned many of the brains of the victims who suffered first hand effects from the pyroclastic flows, into literal glass.

Volcanic glass is nothing new, but this... is. After this discovery, scientists wanted to know if any other parts of the body suffered this same effect, and, after some probing around, it was deduced that only the brains seemed to have had this occurrence.

This type of process is known as vitrification. And this is the first time we've ever seen it occur to the brains of its' victims. Showing just how destructive and... terrifying plinian level volcanic eruptions are.

Over 16,000 people lost their lives to this volcanic eruption. And many of them, were preserved in a state that would allow future archaeologists to bring their final moments back to life using plaster. Which is a point also touched on in this video.
