Millions of Canadians from the Prairies all the way to the East coast are bracing for a fierce blast of winter tonight, as part of a deep freeze that's affecting tens-of-millions on both sides of the border. Over in the U.S., the anticipated winter blast is already bearing down as officials urge citizens to be prepared. Catherine Urquhart has our top story tonight.

In Quebec, emergency rooms are reporting serious overcrowding, with many operating at close to 200 per cent capacity on Saturday. Patients are having to wait hours for help, or in some cases, being sent home without seeing a doctor.

Over in Calgary, a mother of three and her father were remembered last night during a vigil. Police believe they were victims of a targeted attack allegedly carried out by the woman's husband. Just days later, a similar tragedy in Halifax is further raising alarms about the growing issue of intimate partner violence across Canada. As Scott Roberts reports, advocates are calling for changes to the legal system to better address the pressing concern.

Plus, the sudden death of Douglas Eustache — a residential school survivor — remains shrouded in mystery. Despite initial claims by the RCMP in Kamloops, B.C. that no foul play was involved, relatives and neighbours say there are too many unanswered questions. As the coroner's investigation moves into 2025, some say this case highlights ongoing challenges within the justice system for indigenous communities. Neetu Garcha reports.
