In this video, we uncover the hidden history of one of Victoria's most elusive gold deposits – the Meredith Deep Lead, an ancient river of gold buried beneath layers of volcanic rock. While gold rush prospectors in the 1850s flocked to nearby fields like Steiglitz, searching for gold in rich quartz reefs, they completely overlooked this buried treasure. Little did they know that beneath the surface of Meredith, a gold-rich riverbed had been sealed away by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago.

Today, with the help of modern geophysical tools like magnetic surveys, we can trace the clear outline of this ancient river system, revealing its immense potential. In this video, I’ll take you on a journey to explore the geology and history of this deep lead – from how volcanic activity created new, lesser streams while burying the rich gold-filled river, to the challenges of deep lead mining and the untapped gold resources lying beneath Meredith.

We'll explore how miners of the 19th century used dynamite to blast through hard layers of basalt, also known as "bluestone," to access buried riverbeds, risking their lives in perilous underground conditions. The dangers of deep lead mining – from tunnel collapses to sudden flooding from still-flowing ancient watercourses – were immense, but the rewards were even greater. Some of the richest gold yields in Victorian history came from these deep leads, and Meredith’s deep lead could be one of the richest yet, waiting to be rediscovered.
