Global National: June 16, 2020 | Canada extends CERB, but how much will it cost?

Justin Trudeau announced an extension of the Canada Emergency Response on Tuesday. Eric Sorensen explains explains how much longer Ottawa is extending CERB by, and how much it will cost to keep the program going. Temporary foreign workers are among those deemed essential in Canada during the pandemic, but there is now uncertainty around workers from Mexico. The Mexican government may be stopping thousands from coming to Canada after two temporary foreign workers died due to COVID-19. As Abigail Bimman reports, the lack of clarity is stressful for both workers and farmers who employ them. Long-term care home residents have been worst hit by COVID-19 in Canada, almost one-third of Ontario nursing home residents who have died from it were living at facilities owned by two corporate chains. This is one of the findings of a Global News analysis of government statistics, which use self-reported data from long-term care homes. Some unions and health care researchers prove private care homes are more vulnerable to the coronavirus. As Ross Lord reports, others say there are other factors that can't be ignored. As protests against racism and police brutality continue to take place across the U.S., President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at making law enforcement more accountable. But, as Jackson Proskow reports, it's nowhere close to what protesters are demanding. Calls for racial justice in the U.S. and Canada have sparked important conversations about racism. Hal Johnson and Joanne McLeod are known for ParticipACTION's BodyBreak, and Johnson is now speaking out that the show was started to combat racism. Johnson explained the idea for the show came up after racist incidents he faced early in his career, including with TSN.
