Have you ever heard of a lamp that works without electricity or batteries? This is the carbide lamp, one of the earliest lighting inventions based on chemical reactions. This technology was first used more than a century ago, primarily in underground mining. The principle is simple but effective: calcium carbide is placed in a container and slowly dripped with water. The reaction between the two produced acetylene gas, a highly flammable gas that became the light source for these lamps. Although it has since been replaced by more practical and safer LED lights, the carbide lamp remains a symbol of simple innovation based on basic chemistry.
