We're talking about this year’s Australian Open, but this story has nothing to do with Novak Djokovic. Much more sinister was the absence in Melbourne of Chinese tennis champion Peng Shuai. Concern about her wellbeing was first raised when she disappeared late last year, almost immediately after publicly accusing a communist party leader of sexually assaulting her. After being missing for several weeks, she’s now been seen at several carefully staged-managed events, including the Winter Olympics, but Peng Shuai’s reappearance has done little to convince the world she’s okay - or that China respects human rights.
