BLACK ELK (1863-1950) - wičháša wakȟáŋ (healer, "holy man") and Heyoka from the Oglala tribe of the Lakota (Sioux) people. He was the second cousin of Chief Crazy Horse.
The respected elder of the Lakota people lived to be 86 years old.
Given the average life expectancy of the American Indians, this is practically a record of survivability.

The spirit of the Lakota shaman preserves and helps all those who need his prayers, as it was during the life of this great man among mortals, who devoted his life to serving and helping people...

In the hands of the Black Elk is a fan of eagle feathers. With its help, the smoke from the sacred pipe is lifted to the 4 cardinal directions and this is the language of communication with the Wakan Tanka (Great Secret). The spirit of the eagle brings prayers high into the sky.

On the chest of a Lakota elder is a shell decoration made of "hair tubes" called "haa-pipes". These bone tubes in the form of large chest ornaments also served as a shell, for this the tubes were connected in several rows and covered the warrior’s chest and stomach. Sometimes such a shell reached the knees.
The Oglala Sioux (where the shaman comes from) made this armor their attribute of a warrior.
