BLACK ELK. painting by Leonard Peltier. LOOKING IN DETAILS. native americans

BLACK ELK. painting by Leonard Peltier. LOOKING IN DETAILS. BLACK ELK (1863-1950) - wičháša wakȟáŋ (healer, 'holy man') and Heyoka from the Oglala tribe of the Lakota (Sioux) people. He was the second cousin of Chief Crazy Horse. The respected elder of the Lakota people lived to be 86 years old. Given the average life expectancy of the American Indians, this is practically a record of survivability. The spirit of the Lakota shaman preserves and helps all those who need his prayers, as it was during the life of this great man among mortals, who devoted his life to serving and helping people... In the hands of the Black Elk is a fan of eagle feathers. With its help, the smoke from the sacred pipe is lifted to the 4 cardinal directions and this is the language of communication with the Wakan Tanka (Great Secret). The spirit of the eagle brings prayers high into the sky. On the chest of a Lakota elder is a shell decoration made of 'hair tubes' called 'haa-pipes'. These bone tubes in the form of large chest ornaments also served as a shell, for this the tubes were connected in several rows and covered the warrior’s chest and stomach. Sometimes such a shell reached the knees. The Oglala Sioux (where the shaman comes from) made this armor their attribute of a warrior. The scythes of the old man are protected by beaver skins, they do not allow the scythes to get wet and protect from the sun. And two eagle feathers in his hair speaks of his merits to his native tribe. But since the Black Elk lived on a reservation and imbued with the faith of Christians, he is generally dressed in the clothes of white people. But that doesn't make him different (not Native American). He experienced a lot, he saw a lot of things in life - both good and bad ... He is the shield of the Oglala Lakota people, the sacred shield of a brave people with a difficult but glorious fate.... =========================== P.S. Since the 1970s, members of the radical American Indian Movement and others interested in Native American religion have shown growing interest in his writings.

BLACK ELK (1863-1950) - wičháša wakȟáŋ (healer, "holy man") and Heyoka from the Oglala tribe of the Lakota (Sioux) people.

On the chest of a Lakota elder is a shell decoration made of "hair tubes" called "haa-pipes".
