Over the past decade, these events have resulted in over 50,000 fatalities. They are typically triggered by factors such as heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, volcanic activity, or human-induced changes like deforestation and construction. The underlying scientific mechanisms involve the saturation of soil, which reduces its cohesion and increases weight, leading to instability. Once initiated, gravity propels the mixture downhill, gaining momentum and entraining additional material, thereby amplifying its destructive potential.
