The Icelandic authorities have lowered the threat level from a recent volcanic eruption near Grindavík, as no further volcanic activity has been observed. The eruption, which occurred earlier this week, opened a 2.5-mile fissure, emitting orange lava. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) indicated that the activity seemed to have ceased, but cautioned that lava might still be flowing underground. The initial state of emergency has been downgraded, and residents of the evacuated town are now allowed limited daytime access. Precautionary measures included reinforcing the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant, vital for the region's electricity and water supply. With 33 active volcano systems, Iceland has the highest number of such systems in Europe.
