The Most Contaminated Site In The Southern Hemisphere

#westernaustralia #pilbara #asbestos #geology #geologist #geoscience #miningaustralia #mining Wittenoom is the largest contaminated area in the southern hemisphere. Mining took place here beginning in the late 1930s and continued all the way up to 1966, when the Australian Blue Asbestos Company finally shut down following a decline in profits. When mining commenced to extract the precious crocidolite from the Earth, the dangers of asbestos weren't fully known and understood to health care professionals. But it became clear over time that something wasn't right when many of the workers and residents of the town became ill with asbestosis, cancers, and mesothelioma. It became apparent that the cause of this was due to the asbestos deposits which was located all around the town. Tailings from the mining company dot the landscape, and with every wind, dangerous asbestos fibres are suspended in the air. Any inhalation of these fibres, even at a minuet level, can lead to dangerous cancers and tumor growth. This video covers the geology of the blue asbestos, the town that mined it, the eventual decline and the ill effects the residents suffered as a result of mining operations. We will look at how these rare crocidolite deposits were formed by an ancient mountain range that once stood as tall as the Himalayas. The Hamersley basin, turned into the Hamersley range following the collision of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Cratons. This continent to continent collision was the driving factor to the development of the blue asbestos, which was metamorphosed from banded iron formations which are strewn all over North West Western Australia.
