AMD's new Ryzen 7 7700 is a cheaper, lower TDP version of the 7700X. The new CPU competes most directly with the R5 7600 -- which is a price class lower and manages to gather most of the (gaming) performance -- and the i5-13600K, which often outpaces it in production and gaming, or at worst, equals it. This testing benchmarks the R7 7700 vs. the R7 7700X, i5-13600K, R5 7600, and more. We also have tests dating back to the AMD R5 2600, as tested in 2022-2023, to look at possible upgrade options for those wishing to stick with AMD.

Overall, the i5-13600K and R7 7900 (next review!) are more compelling for higher-end work and gaming, while the R5 7600 is more compelling for gaming-only as it achieves most the performance for far cheaper.

Error correction (no impact on conclusion or CPU in review): The RTX 4090 chart at 8 minutes 13 seconds has a 3700X result that we've identified is incorrect. It is the only incorrect result. The result should read 235.9FPS AVG, 157.7FPS 1%, and 140.8FPS 0.1%. We identified this error when rerunning the CPU for other tests. We apologize for the error. Fortunately, there is no impact on the Ryzen 7000 CPUs being reviewed; however, we pride ourselves on correcting errors in the rare instances they happen so that the community has the right data.
