Learn about the Great Wall of China in less than 1 minute!

Did you know the great wall of China isn’t actually a straight line? It goes up and down like this and it’s not one piece of wall, it’s multiple walls that are linked together. The construction of the wall started over 2,300 years ago, and it was mainly to protect the Chinese land from nomadic invaders from the north. Who for some periods were the Mongols or the Turks. The wall is the longest man made structure in the world and it was built by over 6 different Chinese dynasties over almost 2 thousand years with 100s of thousands of builders who were both slaves or criminals serving out their sentences. It’s estimated that around 400,000 people lost their lives trying to build the wall. The wall is a symbol of China’s wealth, architectural and engineering expertise, although it was effective at keeping out invaders, Ghengis khan was able to breach it and conquer parts of China in the 13th Century. The wall became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. I think it’s kind of ironic, because the wall was built to keep out outsiders but now it’s a landmark attracting 60 million tourists a year to some parts of it near Beijing. Like and follow if you learned something here and send it to your smart friend who might like it.
