The most famous marble quarry in Italy is the Carrara marble quarry, located in the Apuan Alps in northern Tuscany. These quarries have been in continuous operation for over 2,000 years and are known for producing high-quality white and blue-grey marble.
The marble from Carrara was used in many iconic works of art and architecture, including Michelangelo's David statue and the Roman Pantheon. Michelangelo personally visited these quarries to select marble blocks for his sculptures. The quarries are massive - there are approximately 650 active or abandoned quarry sites in the area.
The quality of Carrara marble is legendary - it's known for its uniform color, fine grain, and lack of veining. The marble formed millions of years ago when limestone was subjected to intense heat and pressure during mountain formation.
