Murmuration is a unique natural phenomenon in which thousands of birds gather in huge flocks and behave as a single organism. Shrinking and flying apart, changing direction synchronously, soaring up or plummeting down, they form bizarre, continuously changing figures in the sky. Scientists have long struggled to unravel the reasons for this behavior. In 2014, scientists from the University of Warwick proved that the phenomenon of murmuration allows a flock of starlings to maintain such a density that each bird receives the maximum amount of information about its surroundings. This, they say, requires the condition of ultimate transparency. That is, each starling must see light from different angles. The resulting structure of dark and light spots gives the birds all the information they need.
