Imagine winning the Olympics not with a gold medal but with a pot of olive oil! Welcome to the Panathenaic Games, where ancient Greek athletes competed for terracotta amphorae filled with valuable Athenian olive oil. Held every four years in Athens, these games predate the modern Olympics. Instead of medals, winners received these pots, each depicting their sport. This amphora, from around 530 B.C., shows five runners, the earliest event. Athletes competed naked to intimidate rivals. The amphora, by the Euphiletos Painter, features black-figure pottery. Olive oil, from Athena’s groves, symbolized Zeus and was a prized reward. These pots tell stories of a time when victory was celebrated with art and oil, not metal.
