Tesla have recently announced some new features they are adding when it comes to occupant safety. On the new revised Model Y (Juniper) they have said that they are doing rear occupancy detection using the 4D cabin radar and they can detect heartbeats and breathing and it will be used to detect when children or pets are left in the vehicle. The car can then let the owner know via the app and also vent the windows, turn on the climate or even call the emergency services if needed.
But what has also become clear is that they've been fitted a cabin radar in vehicles since around November 2021 (2022 models). But is this radar the same unit fitted in the new Model Y? I don't know.
Tesla are shortly releasing a new over the air software update (version 2025.2.6) which awakens the cabin radar and uses it to detect front passengers. But more than just detect if a passenger is in the seat, it will size up the person so the airbags are deployed appropriately in an accident.
