This prototype was built in 1972 by French tire manufacturer Michelin, in collaboration with Citroën, to test truck tires at high speed. Based on a Citroën DS Break station wagon, the Mille-Pattes (which means centipede in French) had a custom chassis with ten wheels, four of which were steerable. It also had two Chevrolet V8 engines in the rear, one for driving the vehicle and one for driving the test tire, which was mounted in the middle of the car. The Mille-Pattes could reach up to 110 mph and weighed 19 tons. It was equipped with a hydraulic system that could lower and adjust the test tire in various positions and angles. The Mille-Pattes was used for several years on Michelin's test track in Clermont-Ferrand, before being retired and displayed at fairs and exhibitions. Today, it can be seen at the Michelin Museum in Clermont-Ferrand, where it stands as a testament to Michelin's innovation and engineering prowess.
