Although the CIA is usually associated with intelligence gathering, it occasionally interacts with Hollywood. The Agency often provides advice to film projects dealing with national security, like Argo, The Hurt Locker, and Mission Impossible. Even though they consult on numerous films, they seldom take a hands-on approach.
One surprising exception is the 1950s cartoon adaptation of Orwell’s Animal Farm. Here, the CIA not only encouraged the project but actually financed and produced the film. Orwell’s story—about farm animals overthrowing humans, only for the pigs to become oppressors—was a critique of totalitarianism in all forms. Yet the CIA saw it as a potent vehicle for anti-Communist ideas during the Cold War. They viewed it as a propaganda piece to shift public opinion. The Agency believed film was a medium to sway sentiment.
Notably, the Agency altered the original ending to show a successful uprising against new oppressors, transforming Orwell’s cyclical warning about tyranny into a direct triumph of freedom over communism. This rare example underscores the CIA’s willingness to shape narratives for strategic goals, making Animal Farm the only known movie the Agency produced
